Unite with nature in Tibiao
Looking for adrenaline-pumped adventure or soothing escape with nature? You can find both at the coastal and mountainous town of Tibiao.
Road Trip into Antique’s Towns
Located 62 kilometers north of the Antique’s capital San Jose, the trip to this unexplored paradise takes about 2 hours. From San Jose to Tibiao, your adventure starts with a sight-seeing tour of Antique’s green and at times mountainous terrain. Along the way, you may explore the ruins of Patnongon Church, pass at Western Visayas’ longest bridge at Bugasong, breathe fresh seaside breeze at Laua-an, and see for yourself the odd-shaped mountaintop of Mt Igcoron in Valderrama.
Tibiao’s Eco-Adventure Activities
White water kayaking at Tibiao River is a must when you visit this tropical town. The clean and cool water flowing from the mountains, plus the zig-zagging path of the river, is ideal for this adventure. At several points in the river are stations where there are equipment for rent and guides who will assist you in kayaking.
Enjoy the view as you feel the adrenaline rush as you take a ride at the ziplines in the rainforest park. Located at one of the highest points of the town, a ride at the zipline will give you a stunning view of the town proper, the Panay Gulf, and the long stretch of the Tibiao River.
Other adventures in the mountains are offroad biking, river trekking and hiking.
Relax and Commune with Nature
Splashing at Bugtong Bato Falls
Another top tourist destination in Tibiao is its hot kawa baths. A “kawa” is a huge iron vat previously used in cooking muscovado (raw brown sugar).
Long abandoned as the sugar industry in the province declined, the people of Tibiao discovered another use for the kawa – as a firewood-heated bath tub where one can have a similar experience as that in a hot spring or spa.
Add the fresh mountain breeze with the scenic landscape, a hot bath in the kawa is indeed a relaxing experience after a full day of eco-adventure.
And of course, who could go home without experiencing Tibiao’s fish spa?
According to Tibiao Fish Spa website, “Fish spas are a form of ichthyotherapy that use small fish to clean the skin. Fish exfoliate the skin by feeding on the dead layers of skin cells.
This method is safe and totally free of pain. In fact, the distinct tickly sensation produced by the skin-nibbling fish adds to the cleansing benefits and relaxing ambience of fish spas that made them popular in many Asian countries.”
What separates Tibiao’s home grown fish spa is their use of the native species of fish.
The local variety of fish is easy and affordable to maintain, thus making the fish spa experience in Tibiao affordable.
Tibiao’s wide array of souvenir and novelty items are also a must-buy. Along the highway are kiosks which sells locally-made potteries, home decors, and more.
Tibiao is gradually attaining recognition as a top tourist destination in Panay. With strong government support and public-private partnership, Tibiao can realize its great tourism potential.
